WASTE IS A RESOURCE - COMPOST IT

Yard trimmings, food scraps, wood waste and paper are the largest component of our trash- the garbage waste we dispose of, making up more than two-thirds of the solid waste disposal stream
There are a number of environmental benefits to composting garbage waste:

Composting organic matter rather than disposing in landfills reduces the emission of greenhouse gases like methane.
Using compost as fertilizer reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, and promotes higher crop yields.
Compost can regenerate poor soils, and can be used to cleanup (or remediate) contaminated soil by absorbing odors and treating chemicals. Compost has also been shown to bind to heavy metals and prevent them from migrating into groundwater or plants.

You can create your own home compost from garbage waste as well, either in your backyard or indoors using a compost bin, depending on your available space. Waste Composting can be done with a variety of different systems or containers, including kitchen sized compost bins.

VERMICOMPOSTING … Earthworms are the pulse of the soil … !!

Chitralekha Ramachandran

Vermicomposting is the process of using earthworms to turn biodegradable waste into compost.Choosing a local or native species of earthworm for vermicomposting is an important step.

HOW TO COLLECT NATIVE EARTHWORMS?

Identify worm-inhabited soils marked by visible earthworm castings on the soil surface. Dissolve about 500gm jaggery and 500gm fresh cattle dung in 20 litres of water. Sprinkle on an area 1m x 1m.
Cover with straw, leave cattle dung lumps and cover with an old gunny bag.Keep watering for about 20 to 30 days. Earthworms will aggregate here and can be collected and used.
